Fiber cement siding is the most durable and weather-resistant siding material available in residential and commercial construction. It has been shown to resist insects and pests and large temperature swings, and will never rot or warp due to moisture or water damage. It is also highly resistant to fire, making it a wise choice for safety reasons as well as economic reasons.
When you purchase siding, it will be delivered in standard sheets or in pre-cut strips. The strips are usually used for trim - corners, soffits and eave linings. The ceramic fiber sheets are used for the majority of the siding work, and can be cut to the dimensions of your home. It is important, however, that the proper tools are used to cut ceramic fiber siding, as the durability of makes it damaging on certain tools. There are tools available from your local hardware stores that are specifically designed for cutting ceramic fiber siding. They will make the cutting process much easier, and you won't have to damage your existing cutting tools.
When using power tools to cut fiber cement siding, it is again required that you use a special blade that is designed for cutting fiber cement. Remember to wear safety goggles and a dust mask, as the small cement fibers will produce a fine dust. It is also important to have an industrial strength vacuum to clean up the dust and fibers when you are done cutting.
Cutting the ceramic fiber siding is, by far, the most difficult task. Installing the siding planks is easy - especially when compared to installing vinyl or hardboard siding. Self-tapping screws will adhere the siding to your home's flat surface. Remember to install the trim pieces first, then the larger sheets. Finally, simply seal any gaps with a water resistant sealant and the work on your home is done.
By installing the siding, your home becomes more resistant to fire, insulated materials and will need less cleaning and maintenance than if you had installed another siding material. And, your home has an attractiveness and style that can mimic the natural beauty of wood, but without the drawbacks of water damage, rot and termite infestation. Siding can be purchased in a variety of textures and shapes so you achieve the unique look you've always wanted.
